Destiny…How humanity’s arrogance will lead to nature’s ultimate response.
“Don’t start this book if you have anything urgent to do! You won’t be able to put it down. Dr. Peter Petersen’s discovery of bacteria designed to clean up oil spills promises a solution to environmental disaster, but when it is released prematurely, it threatens to end the world as we know it. Wild adventures at sea, geopolitical crisis, a frantic race to avert calamity—all are made human by the story of two brilliant but estranged brothers, grappling with their past. To top it all, there’s the story of first love in the face of an impending catastrophe. This is a rip-roaring thriller with a heart.”
--Rebecca Pepper Sinkler – former editor-in-chief of the New York Times Book Review
“Big ideas, rich characters, seamless storytelling, and the scent and heave of the sea--it's all here in this powerful debut novel by Carl Howe Hansen. With Destiny, Carl starts mapping out his own as one of our best…”
--Richard Adams Carey, author of Against the Tide, Philosopher Fish, and Ravens Children.
Eminent biologist Dr. Peter Petersen reached the pinnacle of his career when he created a bacterium to neutralize oil spills. When a military contractor uses their version of his discovery for the first time, something goes horribly wrong. Could his life’s work be responsible for the chain reaction ending modern civilization? Despite the uncertainty, he is still the president’s choice to lead the effort “to defeat the greatest threat mankind has ever faced.” Meanwhile, his estranged brother may possess the means for their family’s survival…and humanity’s salvation.
Amidst the ensuing chaos, a long-held family secret haunts twenty-two-year-old Kendra Petersen. By sea and land, she and three generations struggle toward reconciliation, their rescue…and our destiny.

The premise of the book is fascinating - a microbe has been created that will eat oil, and it is released to clean up an oil spill at sea. But it doesn't stop with the oil spill, and ends up eating and destroying every single thing that is derived from oil. Which if you think about it is pretty much everything in the world that isn't wood, metal, stone, or natural fiber. And while I did enjoy the book, if you are at all scientifically minded (let alone a chemist or biologist) you really have to suspend disbelief to accept the premise. By the time chemists are done manipulating molecules to make say PVC for plumbing pipe, it bears little resemblance to crude oil. A microbe isn't going to "know" the polymer backbone of the pipe is derived from olefins that were created by cracking crude oil - all it can do is recognize structures. And if it thought PVC,or carpet, or rubber tires looked like food, it would think we do too. So I would have found it easier to accept if the microbe of the story had just been limited to being able to eat crude oil and gasoline. This would still have had catastrophic consequences for civilization as we know it, and been much easier to accept. So just turn off the critical judgement part of your brain, and you'll enjoy it more.

Destiny edition by Carl Howe Hansen Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Really enjoyed this book. Great story, excellent writing.
Loved the story. Familiar with the areas in the story so made it interesting,.
Great story line. Bogged down a bit becoming unbelievable about 3/4 of the way through but redeemed itself toward the end.
This book is a page turner. Fun, believable, futuristic plot/setting with great character development. The writing is descriptive but not overly wordy. Everyone in my book group enjoyed Destiny.
This was amazing and scary because it could happen. Well written, fast paced, good character development. I picked this book up because it was a book club book and I thought maybe it would get me to sleep. BUT! at 2 AM I forced myself to put it down and finished it the next day.
I was very happy to find out there is a sequel to this book. The ending left me wanting more. I can't wait for the sequel.
Destiny is a fictional tale...which could all too easily become real. For the cautionary aspect which it lends to our lives, alone, it is worth a read. As other reviewers have noted, I found it hard at times not to think it was pulled straight from CNN. Two decades ago, although Jurassic Park seemed far-fetched, it nonetheless broadcast warnings of "not to meddle". In our current times, DNA has been extracted from mammoths and more, and genetic engineering is everywhere. Which makes the premise of Destiny all the scarier, as it is far more likely and reasonable to expect THIS kind of biological engineering to happen at some point. And given current world tensions and geopolitical maneuvering, who can say it already hasn't? Destiny should be read by any who have even half an ear for the catch word "sustainability". You will be richer for the read, even if you sleep a little worse at night...
We were warned about the "military-industrial complex" by President Eisenhower (the last one we actually trusted!) "Destiny" is a chillingly plausible tale of what can go wrong when DARPA-eans and their private-industry brethren are given free rein something useful gets weaponized and we all pay the price. This is a thriller of huge proportions, but viewed from an individual and family perspective that makes it relate-able and intriguing. In "Destiny" you'll meet a fascinating family trying to stuff a disastrous genie-of-their-own-invention, back into its bottle. This is a really good read.
